Beyond the Log: Creating Client-Ready SPL Reports
Capturing SPL data is only the first step. In professional sound management workflows, the real deliverable is a clear, defensible report that can be shared with venue operators, promoters, or regulatory bodies.
Smaart v9 (Suite and SPL editions) includes a built-in SPL reporting system that allows engineers to export standardized PDF reports directly from logged measurement data. These reports are designed to document compliance, summarize exposure, and clearly present limit exceedances without requiring external data processing.
Key Metrics Commonly Included in SPL Reports
Event Summary Metrics
Smaart SPL reports can include:
- Overall LAeq calculated over the defined reporting period
- Absolute LCpeak measured during the event
These values provide a high-level overview of both average sound energy and peak sound pressure, which are commonly requested by authorities and venue owners.
Limit Exceedance (Violation) List
When SPL limits are defined in advance, Smaart can:
- Detect periods where the measured level exceeds the configured threshold
- List those exceedances in the exported report
This allows the report to clearly document when and how often limits were crossed, using the same data that was monitored in real time.
Report Metadata and Identification
Smaart allows users to include identifying information such as:
- Event name
- Venue
- Date and time
- Operator notes
This ensures the exported PDF can be clearly linked to a specific event and measurement context. Graphical branding and layout customization are not part of Smaart’s native reporting system and are typically applied after export if required.
Using Exposure Metrics for Staff Safety Reporting
In addition to SPL limits, Smaart SPL supports exposure-based metrics using established models such as NIOSH and OSHA.
When reporting for employee or crew safety, exposure metrics:
- Translate level and duration into a cumulative dose
