The Time Domain: Understanding the “Impulse” in Impulse Response
While most sound engineers spend their lives in the Frequency Domain (EQ, RTA, Magnitude), the most critical problems in a sound system often exist in the Time Domain. If your timing is wrong, your frequency response will never be right. This is why Smaart’s IR Mode is the secret weapon of the elite system tech.
1. What is an Impulse Response (IR)?
Imagine a perfect, infinitely short “pop.” An IR measurement shows how that pop travels through your system and the room. It maps energy (y-axis) against time (x-axis).
- Direct Sound: The very first thing the mic hears.
- Early Reflections: Reflections that arrive within 20-50ms. These can actually add to the perceived “clarity” and loudness.
- Late Reflections/Reverberation: Energy arriving after 100ms, which typically degrades speech intelligibility.
2. The Live IR vs. IR Mode
In Smaart v9 ST, you have two ways to see time data:
- Live IR: A small window inside Real-Time mode. It’s perfect for finding the “Delay Offset” to align speakers.
- IR Mode: A dedicated environment for high-resolution acoustic analysis. This is where you calculate RT60 and STI.
3. Using the Linear vs. Logarithmic View
In IR Mode, you can toggle between “Lin” (Linear) and “Log” (Logarithmic) views.
Linear is best for seeing the polarity of a driver (does the spike go up or down?).
Log (or ETC) is best for seeing reflections, as it shows the energy on a decibel scale, making it much easier to identify a reflection that is $-20\text{dB}$ down from the main signal.
The Takeaway: You cannot fix a time problem with an EQ. If Smaart shows a reflection causing a cancellation, your only tools are speaker placement, physical treatment, or delay. Understand the time domain, and the frequency domain will finally make sense.
