Omni-directional pre-polarised condenser microphone for mobile devices
The MELLab CEL-4 is an omni-directional, pre-polarised condenser measurement microphone designed specifically for use with mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets. It is intended for portable acoustic measurement tasks where consistency, repeatability, and controlled frequency response are required.
The microphone provides a free-field frequency response within ±1 dB from 10 Hz to 10 kHz, extending to 22 kHz within ±2 dB at 0° incidence. This response characteristic supports reliable frequency-domain measurements when used with mobile-based analysis and measurement software.
Sensitivity is specified at 7 mV/Pa (±2 dB at 250 Hz), allowing predictable gain structure when paired with compatible mobile audio interfaces. The CEL-4 uses negative polarity: a positive pressure variation on the diaphragm produces a negative voltage at the output connector.
The microphone supports sound pressure levels up to 125 dB SPL with less than 3% total harmonic distortion, providing sufficient headroom for typical mobile measurement scenarios. A signal-to-noise ratio of 70 dB ensures adequate dynamic range for general acoustic analysis work.
Temperature stability is maintained with a low temperature coefficient of +0.04 dB/°C. The CEL-4 is specified for operation between −10 °C and +50 °C, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor mobile measurement environments.
