What is L-IFFT?
L-IFFT (Live Inverse Fourier Transform) is an alternate view of the Live IR plot in both Suite and RT editions of Smaart.
This view uses the single time record FFT calculated with every transfer function measurement (in Smaart v9) to plot an absolute time-referenced live impulse response.

This has the benefits of a real-time transfer function measurement applied to it: upon generating, all real-time transfer function data averaging and magnitude thresholding mechanisms are already applied. You can then filter this plot with a user-definable octave-banded frequency without needing to use the Advanced Delay Finder.

L-IFFT is an advanced feature that must be enabled via checkbox under the Advanced tab of the Preferences menu, as shown below:

Once enabled, in the IR window, use the LIR plot type dropdown and select “L-IFFT” in the menu that opens to switch to L-IFFT view. You can also switch back at any time!

Important distinction
L-IFFT does not replace Live IR. Both views are valid and useful, but they are based on different data sources:
- Live IR: Direct time-domain capture
- L-IFFT: Impulse response reconstructed from the transfer function
Understanding that distinction is key to choosing the appropriate tool for the measurement task at hand.
Smaart is excellent on its own, but most users find they get much more out of it after some structured training. That’s where our seminars come in. At TZ Audio we run practical seminars, both online and in-venue. We offer seminar-only or full “all you need packages” including software & hardware. It’s simply the fastest way to become comfortable and confident with the measuring a sound system.
If you’re in Norway, Sweden, Denmark or Iceland – or elsewhere – we offer is online seminars and traveling to Norway is a valid option too of course. We’re here if you have any questions about the software or upcoming seminars.
Thanks for reading!
